Attorney: Eddie Long's wife proceeds with divorce (AP)
DECATUR, Ga. ? An attorney for the wife of Bishop Eddie Long says she is moving forward with plans to end her 21-year marriage to the embattled Georgia megachurch pastor.
In a statement issued late Friday, Vanessa Long's attorney says "she has determined that dismissal of her divorce petition is not appropriate at this time." Earlier Friday, she said in a statement released through Eddie Long's New Birth Missionary Baptist Church that she loves her husband and planned to withdraw her petition.
According to the divorce petition filed Thursday in DeKalb Superior Court, the couple is "currently living in a bona fide state of separation." The split comes more than a year after allegations that Eddie Long used his lavish lifestyle and position of spiritual authority to lure four young men into sexual relationships. Eddie Long settled the cases but has never admitted to any wrongdoing.

Is Syria in a civil war?
On Thursday, Navi Pillay, the UN's high commissioner for human rights, said that the nation's political unrest has indeed approached the level of a civil war. Pillay said her assessment stems in part from recognition that elements of the opposition to the Bashar al-Assad regime are increasingly calling for armed resistance. She added that UN estimates of the conflict's death toll--4,000 killed in the past nine months--are likely understated.
"I have said that as soon as there were more and more defectors threatening to take up arms--I said this in August before the Security Council --there was going to be a civil war," Pillay told a news conference in Geneva Thursday, according to a Reuters report. "At the moment, that's how I am characterizing this."
However, it appears that Pillay's is not yet the official UN line. Shortly after she delivered her remarks, her spokesman walked back the characterization, asserting that Syria is, rather, on the "cusp" of civil war, and "heading" in that direction.
"It is definitely heading that way, with more and more reports of armed resistance to the government forces," Pillay's spokesman Rupert Colville told Reuters. "It is on the cusp, but in these circumstances it is hard to say definitively at what point it becomes civil war."
So what prompted the walk-back? And what determines whether the Syrian bloodshed constitutes a civil war?
State Department urges Syria opposition to remain peaceful
The State Department has likewise shied away from Pillay's characterization, noting that the United States has called on both the Syrian regime and the pro-democracy protesters alike to refrain from violence.
"Obviously, we have been very clear in saying that we believe that . . . the opposition needs to remain peaceful," State Department spokesman Mark Toner told journalists at the press conference Thursday.Read More ?

Stock futures jump after China bank move (Reuters)
NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Stock index futures rose on Wednesday after China unexpectedly cut its banks' reserve requirements in hopes of boosting an economy running at its weakest pace since 2009.
* China's central bank cut the reserve requirement ratio for commercial lenders for the first time in nearly three years. The move comes as policymakers worldwide worry the global economy may stumble as the euro zone struggles to tackle its debt crisis.
* Global markets reversed early losses, with the FTSEurofirst 300 (.FTEU3) rising 0.7 percent and the MSCI world equity index (.MIWD00000PUS) gaining 0.2 percent.
* S&P 500 futures put on 6.3 points and were above fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures gained 51 points, and Nasdaq 100 futures added 12.5 points.
* Euro zone ministers agreed to ramp up the firepower of a regional rescue fund, but couldn't say by how much, and may turn to the International Monetary Fund for more help.
* Financial stocks will be in focus after Standard & Poor's on Tuesday reduced its credit ratings on 15 big banks, mostly in the Europe and the United States, after a sweeping overhaul of its ratings criteria.
* JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N), Bank of America Corp (BAC.N), Citigroup Inc (C.N), Wells Fargo & Co (WFC.N), Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS.N), Morgan Stanley (MS.N) each had their rating reduced by one notch each.
* The ADP Employment report for November, due at 8:15 a.m. EST, is expected to show 130,000 private sector gains, its best reading since April and the third consecutive reading above 110,000.
* The pending home sales index, to be released at 10 a.m. EST, is seen rising 1.5 percent for October.
* Goldman has raised $600 million from clients such as pension funds, wealthy families and large institutions for a new fund that would provide start-up money to hedge fund managers, the Wall Street Journal reported.
* The Dow and S&P 500 advanced for a second day on Tuesday as stronger-than-expected consumer confidence data and hopes for further progress on a solution to Europe's fiscal mess bolstered sentiment.

U.S. uncertain Israel would advise before Iran strike (Reuters)
ABOARD A U.S. MILITARY AIRCRAFT (Reuters) ? The top U.S. military officer told Reuters on Wednesday he did not know whether Israel would alert the United States ahead of time if it decided to take military action against Iran.
General Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, also acknowledged differences in perspective between the United States and Israel over the best way to handle Iran and its nuclear program.
He said the United States was convinced that sanctions and diplomatic pressure was the right path to take on Iran, along with "the stated intent not to take any options off the table" - language that leaves open the possibility of future military action.
"I'm not sure the Israelis share our assessment of that. And because they don't and because to them this is an existential threat, I think probably that it's fair to say that our expectations are different right now," Dempsey said in an interview as he flew to Washington from London.
Asked whether he was talking about the differences between Israeli and U.S. expectations over sanctions, or differences in perspective about the future course of events, Dempsey said: "All of the above." He did not elaborate.
He also did not disclose whether he believed Israel was prepared to strike Iran.
Iran is facing new sanctions after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported earlier in November that Tehran appeared to have worked on designing a bomb and may still be conducting secret research to that end.
Iran says its nuclear program is peaceful.
The sanctions push got added momentum on Wednesday as diplomatic sources said Britain would support an embargo on Iranian oil imports. But Iran sees its nuclear program as a source of power and prestige and it is unclear whether sanctions will alter its cost-benefit analysis.
There has been concern that if world powers cannot nudge Iran into serious nuclear negotiations, then Israel, which feels threatened by Iranian nuclear aspirations, will attack.
Asked directly whether Israel would alert the United States ahead of time if it chose to go forward with military action, Dempsey replied flatly: "I don't know."
NO NEW ARGUMENTS
Last week, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta raised American concerns about the unintended consequences of any military action against Iran during talks with his Israeli counterpart, Ehud Barak, at a security forum in Canada.
Those included U.S. fears about fallout on the world economy and that a strike would only delay - not derail - Iran's nuclear program.
Iran has warned that it will respond to any attacks by hitting Israeli and U.S. interests in the Gulf. Analysts say Tehran could retaliate by closing the Strait of Hormuz, the waterway where about 40 percent of all traded oil passes.
Dempsey, who took over the Pentagon's top uniformed position in September, said there were no new arguments the United States was about to pose to Israel on the matter. Instead, he cited U.S. and Israeli efforts to "consistently try to update each other on the existing arguments."
