Yanks, O's both win, remain tied

After the Orioles closed out the Red Sox 6-3 to finish a three-game sweep Sunday, the Yankees completed their comeback on the Blue Jays, winning 9-6 to preserve the tie atop the AL East.

They say I can?t focus on the positive. Let?s give it a whirl:

Yankees ? Definitely a great day for the offense after a sluggish start. The slumping Alex Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored. The first of those runs came when he hustled home on a wild pitch. Robinson Cano stayed hot, going 3-for-5 with two doubles to finish the four game series with 10 hits. He had 15 hits during the seven-game road trip, raising his average to .306.

Blue Jays ? Henderson Alvarez turned in another successful start against the Yankees, allowing two runs in six innings. He pitched seven innings of three-run ball at Yankee Stadium 11 days ago. He ended up striking out 17 over 18 2/3 innings in his final three starts, an encouraging sign if there ever was one. He was at 62 strikeouts in 169 1/3 innings through 28 starts.

Orioles ? This team just never lets up. Nate McLouth, J.J. Hardy and Chris Davis all homered today. Jim Thome had two hits and two RBI, and it?s looking more likely that he can be a key contributor in the postseason. Joe Saunders improved to 3-3 with a 3.63 ERA in seven starts for Baltimore, putting him in a position to start a game in the ALDS should the club advance.

Red Sox ? The loss clinched a spot in the bottom 10 of the major league standings, meaning they won?t lose their first-round pick if they sign a top free agent this winter. They?ll have a top-10 pick for the first time since 1993 (when they got Trot Nixon seventh overall) and just the second time since 1967.

See? good news for everyone!

Why You Should Not Ignore Social Media Marketing For Your ...

It seems practically everyone today has a social media presence. Why not take advantage of that fact and use social media as a marketing platform? There are thousands of people creating Twitter and Facebook pages each day. Businesses are doing it! So should you! Read the following tips and you can market your business through the social media websites.

Every post you make on your blog should include a link at the top to share it on Facebook. This will let people who visit your blog share what they see with their friends. This can have a multiplying effect and expand the number of viewers. This, in turn, will generate even more visitors to buy your products.

Be certain to add postings and updates often. Give contacts and readers something to anticipate and depend on. Determine your own posting schedule, or consider using a service able to post on your behalf at regular intervals. This is a great way to keep readers interested.

TIP! Consider a giveaway for your profile on the social media sites. Something for nothing is always tempting to your potential customers and the offer may attract them to start following your business site.

Build a party for your Twitter followers. Identify a specific time and date during which all of your followers use hashtags to discuss a trending topic. Ask a few knowledgeable bloggers to chat with your customers. Be sure to choose bloggers who are reputable, and will write about your party as well as bring in people from their crowd.

If you want more people to view your posts on Twitter, use hash tags that are relevant to your example. Figure out which keyword applies best, like #cooking for a recipe or #Toronto for an event you?re hosting in the city. This will get your posts to show up in lists and searches and will let people who aren?t following you see what you have to say.

If your company has a blog that you update with content, make sure you highlight new content after publication on social media sites. Your subscribers will know that there is content up that they have not yet seen.

TIP! Share updates of influential users of Twitter or try mentioning them in posts by having their usernames placed after the ?@? symbol. These people will retweet your post or even write a reply tweet just for you.

Anytime you post on Twitter, make sure a tag is added on. Tags will show after the # symbol. They will allow your updates to show up in feeds for particular subscribers. Choose your tags wisely and look for groups that your target audience would be likely to subscribe to.

Maintain records of progress along the way. Create measurable statistics that track your new activity and followers. Figure out which actions gained you the most action, and then repeat those strategies. If you aren?t monitoring all your social medial marketing results then it becomes impossible to know what works and what doesn?t.

Add catchy titles to your videos when you market on YouTube. They are important if you want to market your business using YouTube. Make sure they are interesting and entice users so much they cannot help but press ?play.? For best results, you should include one or two keywords in the title.

TIP! Make sure you give your content a good headline. Make sure you ask questions that they will want to know the answers for.

This article has provided some dialogue about various ways in which you can reap the benefits of social media for the benefit of your business. Implement all of the strategies you learned and make sure you always expose yourself to new information as well, when you do this you?ll see success before you know it. Your hard work will pay off when millions of users can see your product and your income

The Mothers: Susie, Milo and Bibi

Name: Susie?

Children: Milo (nearly 5) and Isobel, also known as Bibi, 18 months.

Location:

Chorlton, Manchester

Expectations of Motherhood:

?With my eldest, Milo, I had none. I think because of that, I actually found becoming a mother the most incredible and empowering experience. Here was something I could do and it felt that I could do it "right"; I trusted my instincts. Second time round, I did have an expectation. I expected it to be hard, sure, but I thought I'd be able to do it all again, that having my daughter would just add to my love and my abilities as a mother.

Reality of Motherhood:

?Having Bibi has been one of the hardest things I've ever done. I say that as a mother who is totally and utterly devoted to her daughter, who loves the bones of her, who can't be away from her without experiencing a phyiscal pull. I miss my kids when they are not physically here with me. But oh, Bibi was a hard baby. She didn't sleep, day or night, for the first ten months. She was so angry and cross; I'd regularly be in tears at 9am, thinking, how the hell am I going to manage the rest of the day on my own with her? I was so tired. I missed hanging out with just me and Milo. And the most shocking thing of all: I didn't think it would be like this. I expected to fall in love with her in the same way I had with Milo; but that rush of immediate first love was a long time coming. Don't get me wrong, I would have wrestled a tiger (and quite possibly won) for her, but she was hard to love.

I remember crying on the tram, in front of all these people, when she just wouldn't stop crying, and she'd been crying for something like 48 hours straight. I'd tried to pick her up to comfort her but she just fought me off - that was what was so hard. Not that she cried, but that she was so angry with it. She didn't want comfort. Poor Milo was there on the tram, one of my poor neighbours too (who to her credit, did offer to help). I didn't want help, though, because I knew that whatever break I had, whether it was 5 minutes or 5 hours, I'd have to go back to having her scream at me, unrelentingly, day and night.

The turning point came that day; I realised I couldn't go on. My lovely husband stepped in and took over the nights and, eventually, after a further few months, Bibi started sleeping. That, coupled with her also being able to walk and to be able to communicate, was the turning point. I think Bibi just didn't like being a baby. By 12 months she was a changed girl. She has become the most wonderful, good-natured, hilarious, feisty and slightly bonkers toddler. I am in awe of her, I am in love with her. And finally I have bonded with her.

So when she was born I lost all the confidence I had in being a good mother. I don't think I was, for a long time. It's something I actually feel very ashamed about. I "should" have been better. And part of the reason for doing this project is to out myself, to say, you know what, I failed, to begin with. But I found a way back. And to say sorry to my darling girl - because, you know what, for all she drove me half way to insanity, I wouldn't have had it any other way. I would do it all again, just to have her in my life. Only I'd hope I'd be able to be slightly less crap if I did it again.

So - Bibi, if you ever read this: I love you. You are wonderful. And if anyone ever makes you feel otherwise (including me), you have my full permission to have words with them. And not necessarily nice words, either.

Taking your children home for the first time:?I don't want to be a Chorlton cliche, but I had Bibi at home. It was less about being an 'earth mother' (I'm really not) but more about practicalities. Milo was asleep, I was 5 mins from hospital if anything went wrong (and quite possibly had better care than I would in hospital; I had 2 Grade 7 midwives with me throughout), and I just wanted to be left alone to get on with it. So afterwards, my midwife ran me a bath, made my bed, and I got in and snuggled up with my new girl. Five minutes later, Milo woke up and, still in his PJs, met his baby sister. That bit - giving him the best present ever - that made it all worth it. Milo and Bibi are very close; they adore each other, and I hope that their relationship started that morning when he climbed into bed: me, Simon, Milo and Bibi, all together.

The best/worst advice:?I made a point early on not to listen to anything other than medical advice. Babies are people; people are unique. So why would you try and apply a 'one size fits all' approach to your own child?

The hardest part of being a mother:?The lack of time.

The best parts of being a mother:?Having two people in my life who constantly amaze me, who make me laugh, who remind me what fun means, who teach me how to be a better, less selfish person. Honestly, my kids rock: hanging out with them is a privilege.

Hopes for your family:?That Milo and Bibi will be happy and healthy, meet people in their lives who make them feel good about themselves, and that they both grow up knowing, at the core of them, that they are OK just as they are. They don't have to 'be' anything to be good enough; they just have to be.

What advice would you offer to new and expectant mums:?Be kind to yourself. And take help when it is offered, and ask for it if it isn't.

'Britishisms' creep into American English

British people have long bemoaned the gradual encroachment of Americanisms into everyday speech, via Hollywood films and sitcoms. Now, "Britishisms" are crossing the pond the other way, thanks to the growing online popularity of British media such as Harry Potter, Downton Abbey and The Daily Mail.

For example, BBC News reports that "ginger" as a descriptor of a red-haired, freckly person has shot up in usage in the United States since 1998. That's the year the first Harry Potter book, with its Weasley family of gingers, hit store shelves. The trend shows up in Google Ngram searches, which track the frequency of words and phrases appearing in print.

The Britishism invasion also includes "cheeky," "twee," "chat-up," "sell-by date" and "the long game," as well as "do the washing up," "keen on," "bit" (as in "the best bit"), "to book" (e.g. a flight), "called X" (instead of "named X") and "to move house."

    3. Tired of killing, tribe resorts to old traditions
    4. China volcano shows signs of unrest

A few of these now sound so familiar to American ears that their recent limey origins might come as a surprise. [ Why Do Americans and Brits Have Different Accents? ]

While some of these British terms have gained ground because they sound pleasantly posh to American ears, Jesse Sheidlower, American editor-at-large of the Oxford English Dictionary, says others simply fill a gap where there is no equivalent in American English. "One-off," as in something which is done, or made, or which happens only once, and "go missing," instead of the vaguer "disappear," are two examples.

According to Sheidlower, the small but noticeable increase in the American usage of traditionally British terms doesn't bother Americans nearly as much as Americanisms bother many Brits.

"In the U.K., the use of Americanisms is seen as a sign that culture is going to hell," he told BBC News. "But Americans think all British people are posh, so ? aside from things that are fairly pretentious ? no one would mind."

This laissez-faire linguistic attitude hasn't always been the American way. Early in U.S. history, when the nation was striving to distinguish itself from its former landlords, the dictionary maker Noah Webster set about establishing a distinctly American form of English. Webster's legacy includes the lack of "u" in words like "color" and the "-er" ending in words like "center" ? spelling variants he viewed as superior to their British counterparts (colour and centre).

Some of the economical spellings Webster adopted, such as "public" instead of the British "publick," have since spread back to England. Clearly, in the continuously evolving languages of these trans-Atlantic allies, there is give and take.

September 28, 2012 ? Books books luke

I have three kids that have a great selection of books here at home. They love to read and enjoy exploring new worlds inside the cover of a book. So last week I took the opportunity to talk to the director of our local Sunrise Children?s Home. We decided it would be a great idea to gather some gently loved children?s books to bring to the children that they work with who don?t have the same access to books that my kids have. I put out the word to our local community of readers and ended up with a huge box of Goosebumps chapter books, Dora the Explorer, Sponge Bob, Teenage Turtles, and more.

About the Book Donations

Because children in crisis situations are often not able to concentrate on their reading skills and educational goals, sometimes an activity book or coloring book with a popular character is just the thing needed to get them excited about reading. You can hop over and look at some of the books I found last week in Walmart when I first decided to look for some books for the Sunrise Children?s Home.

About Sunrise Children?s Home

Sunrise Children?s Services is a private provider of care to children who have suffered abuse and neglect. Licensed by the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services and accredited by the Joint Commission, Sunrise operates a statewide network of residential centers and therapeutic foster homes. Currently, Sunrise serves over 500 children each day and thousands every year.

We gathered up the books and took them to the director today.

You can see my whole shop experience in pictures on my Google+ photo album.

Thanks to those who donated books, activity pads, chapter books, early readers, notebooks, school supplies and more. Together we can make a difference.

DIY Enthusiasts 'Must Check Their Home Insurance Policy ...

Property owners must ensure their home insurance policies are in check before carrying out home improvements, one expert has advised.

With any DIY job there is the potential for disaster and homeowners must cover their backs before risking thousands of pounds worth of damage repair.

Anna-Marie DeSouza, editor of Build It magazine, said: ?You would be surprised by the number of people who have simply wanted to update a room by painting it, but have accidentally dropped the pot and ruined the flooring.?

Even the smallest of jobs can go wrong so it is particularly important that before a large-scale improvement is made homeowners are insured correctly.

This advice does not just end with DIY ? making an extravagant purchase and adding to your furnishings are reason enough to update your home insurance policy.

For those who are unsure of who to ask about their policy, Ms DeSouza advises that they speak to their provider for clarity and how to extend protection if necessary.

She says that the policies of most homeowners provide cover for improvements such as flooring, sanitary ware and soft furnishings, but for more advanced structural changes they may want to double check that they have the protection they need.

No risks must be taken in selecting cheap home insurance if it does not offer the right amount of cover. Damage to a property can rack up bills far higher than the revisions of home insurance.

Ms DeSouza further warns: ?Unless you are a professional in the field you shouldn?t carry out any electrical repair or upgrade work, you won?t get cover and work can be illegal.?

Homeowners risk both their home and bank balance when taking on tasks they are not equipped for. This also applies to hiring someone who is not adequately trained to fit their improvements, where you may be paying for a dodgy service and further damage.

Any updates you wish to make to your policy must be communicated to your provider as soon as possible and preferably before any home improvements begin.

Billionaire Soros pledges $1.5 million to Democratic "Super PACs"

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Billionaire financier George Soros has committed $1.5 million to "Super PACs" backing President Barack Obama and Democrats running for Congress in the November 6 election, officials with those groups said on Thursday.

Soros - a prominent donor to liberal political causes - has pledged $1 million to Priorities USA Action, which is running ads to help the Democratic president's re-election bid, and $500,000 to Majority PAC and House Majority PAC, which help Democratic congressional candidates, the officials said.

The move by Soros, who had remained largely on the sidelines of this year's Super PAC fundraising barrage, could trigger more big checks from wealthy Democrats who previously avoided giving to the groups, citing dismay over the growing role of money in politics.

Super PACs are outside groups formally unaffiliated with campaigns. They have been raking in unlimited amounts from individuals, corporations and unions to support candidates or issues.

Until this year, Soros, whose net worth is estimated by Forbes at $19 billion, held the record as the biggest contributor in an election cycle for the $27.5 million he estimated he spent in 2004 to try to defeat Republican President George W. Bush.

His record was eclipsed this year by Las Vegas casino owner Sheldon Adelson, who says he has given $70 million to help Republicans in the 2012 election.

Soros' adviser said previously that the financier was more focused in this campaign on grass-roots political organizing.

Soros last year made six-figure donations to the Majority and House Majority PACs and pledged $2 million earlier this year to American Bridge 21st Century, a research-focused Super PAC that does no ads, and America Votes, a group that helps coordinate campaign work for liberal groups nationwide [ID:nL1E8G80B3].

Soros' new pledges to the trio of Democratic Super PACs was revealed on Thursday at a gathering of big liberal donors known as Democracy Alliance, according to The New York Times, which first reported the commitment.

In August, Priorities USA for the first time raised more than its Republican counterpart that backs Mitt Romney in his bid for the presidency - $10.1 million to $7 million.

At the end of last month, Priorities USA had $4.8 million left in cash on hand, compared with $6.3 million left in the coffers of the pro-Romney Restore Our Future.

The Majority and House Majority PACs also saw fundraising increase in August. Democratic fundraisers said donors felt increased urgency in the last weeks before Election Day and in the face of powerful Super PACs backing Republican candidates.

TILL DEATH ? ? GuyanaLive Blog

27Sep/12

I was invited to a one act play by a friend via Facebook and I said to myself - what the heck, why not try something different. So I secured myself a hot date and headed to the National Cultural Centre to see this play ? which happens to be one competing in the finals of the 2nd Annual National Drama Festival.

The play entitled TILL DEATH speaks mainly and POWERFULLY to domestic violence. It was riveting and real. A true interpretation of the blood, sweat and tears of a domestic violence relationship. Patrons were introduced to a clearly arrogant husband, Trevor, ?and his overly fearful yet sometimes resilient wife, Tessa. The play chronicled the cycle of domestic violence, from the impulsive attitudes to the numerous problems with everything to the shouting and the name calling to the physical aspect (kicking, slapping, etc.) to the denial on the woman?s part to her thinking it is her fault that she was ill-treated to her saying that her husband does indeed love her to her refusing to get help and then the cycle continues until one or both parties end up cold and stiff in a freezer somewhere. Vivid? That is the reality of it. Domestic violence relationships literally do go TILL DEATH.

In the play the regular spousal swabbles which included physical violence alarmed everyone except the wife (the sufferer) and the husband (the abuser). Friends and family (Dianne, the best friend and Tessa?s mother) tried to help but Tessa was convinced that she could make it work without their intervention until Trevor decided to take her life. He poisoned her; Tessa knowingly ingested the substance that was going to claim her life. But not before she returned the favour, and Trevor unknowingly gulped down the substance he forced on his wife. TILL DEATH did they part.

The play sent a powerful message but what I found extremely disturbing was the fact that most persons found the parts where the husband was kicking and slapping his wife to be rather hilarious. Domestic violence is no joke. Many times woman and quite frequently their children are splashed across the front of our newspapers ? a picture in happier times or a picture with them sliced and diced ? because someone or themselves thought it funny, or paid little or no attention to the situation. No doubt, men are also the victims of abuse, regardless of who it is we need to understand the seriousness of this issue and we need to work together to eradicate it from our communities.

No, I?m not writing to preach about domestic violence, I?m writing about the play (and many others like it) which in my opinion can be used as an effective domestic violence awareness tool. It was well written by a very promising playwright, Tashandra Inniss, and the actors did an excellent job in bringing out the message.

The four young and talented actors who brought the play to life were masterful in their deliveries. Costumes, emotions, approach and I guess their love for the art enabled them to perform beautifully. So much so that at the end of the play, the ?wife? of the play was crying, I guess she was really in her role and that?s what makes theatre fun and that?s what the audience love. Own your role!

Kudos to the writer and the actors and the director for a job well done!

The National Drama Festival is still continuing at the National Cultural Centre so if you?re a lover of the arts or just looking for something diverse to do then I suggest you go to see one of the plays. These plays focus on a plethora of prevalent issues found in our societies. ?And tickets are absolutely FREE.

Who knew an evening at the NCC accompanied by a dashing young man would be so wonderful and enthralling??!!!

New Zealand spy agency rapped over Megaupload blunder

WELLINGTON (Reuters) - New Zealand's spy agency illegally carried out surveillance on Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom, an official report showed on Thursday, prompting an apology from the prime minister and dealing a possible blow to a U.S. bid to extradite him.

Washington wants the 38-year-old German national, also known as Kim Schmitz, to be sent to the United States to face charges of internet piracy and breaking copyright laws.

Thursday's report by the Inspector-General of Intelligence, the official watchdog for New Zealand spy agencies, found the Government Communications and Security Bureau (GCSB) had spied on Dotcom, despite a law prohibiting it from spying on New Zealand citizens and residents.

The flamboyant Dotcom attained New Zealand permanent residency status in 2010.

"It is the GCSB's responsibility to act within the law, and it is hugely disappointing that in this case its actions fell outside the law," Prime Minister John Key said in a statement, adding the blunder was the result of "basic errors".

Key apologized to Dotcom and all New Zealanders, saying they were entitled to be protected by the law and that it had failed them.

New Zealand police asked the GCSB to keep track of Dotcom and his colleagues before a raid in late January on his rented country estate near Auckland, which saw computers and hard drives, works of art, and cars confiscated.

The illegal surveillance may deal another blow to the U.S. extradition case after a New Zealand court ruled in June that search warrants used in the raid on Dotcom's home were illegal.

The raid followed a request by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for the arrest of Dotcom for leading a group that netted $175 million since 2005 by allegedly copying and distributing music, films and other copyrighted content without authorization.

Dotcom maintains that the Megaupload site was no more than an online storage facility, and has accused Hollywood of lobbying the U.S. government to prosecute him.

U.S. authorities are currently appealing a New Zealand court decision that Dotcom should be allowed to see the evidence on which the extradition hearing will be based.

The extradition hearing has been delayed until March 2013.

FTN: 'Barfi' not the best Indian entry for the Oscars - Shows - Face ...

Video

Sagarika Ghose: Hi there. Yes, the film 'Barfi!' is India's entry for the Oscars for the year 2013. There's been a great deal of adverse comment on this choice made by the jury of the Film Federation of India with many, saying 'Barfi!' was simply not the best in a list that included among others the Telegu film 'Eega', Hindi films 'Paan Singh Tomar', 'Gangs of Wasseypur' and 'Kahani', Marathi film 'Deeol' and Malayalam film 'Akashthinte Niram'. Critics say Barfi borrows heavily from other films and is too dependent on the Bollywood star system. Let's ask our panellists, if sending 'Barfi!' to the Oscars is doing an injustice to Indian contemporary cinema?

Joining us tonight Sudhir Mishra, producer and filmmaker. Joining us Meenakshi Shedde, film critic. Joining us Rajeev Masand, entertainment editor of CNN-IBN. And Manju Bora, Assamese filmmaker, and she was the head of the jury of the Film Federation of India, which has in fact sent 'Barfi!' to the Oscars. Let me kick it off with you Manju Bora. You were the head of the jury that has sent 'Barfi!' to the Oscars. Let me put to you a question that has come in from a viewer. This is Malvika Chandan, who has written to us on twitter. She has said, "Wondering about selection criteria and if Film Federation of India has been biased to films that portray India more positively." She has asked a second question, "If 'Barfi!' does get nominated it joins the league of 'Lagaan', 'Salaam Bombay', 'Mother India'. Does it belong to that league?" So two questions, what are the selection criteria, and does 'Barfi!' belong to the league of 'Mother India', 'Lagaan' and 'Salaam Bombay'?

Manju Bora: First of all I would like to clearout that this film for Oscar nomination for foreign category is not selected by the Film Federation of India. Film Federation of India, is am organisation which brings people from different states and form a jury, it is the responsibility of the jury to select a film. That is my first clarification.

Critics say Barfi borrows heavily from other films and is too dependent on the Bollywood star system.

FTN: 'Barfi' not the best Indian entry for the Oscars

CNN-IBN

Sagarika Ghose: So it is a jury that is based from members of Film Federation of India.

Manju Bora: No, jury is selected from different parts of the country, and Film Federation of India is no say in selecting a movie.

Sagarika Ghose: Right. But you were head of this jury?

Manju Bora: Yes.

Sagarika Ghose: So comment on these two questions. What are the selection criteria and does 'Barfi!' belong to the league of 'Mother India', 'Lagaan' and 'Salaam Bombay'?

Manju Bora: Well, it depends on the films which get entry to the competition. Like this year there were only 20 films. The country were we talk about producing largest number of films in the world, so we can't send a film which is in controversy. But with our limitation, our job was to select a film, and the 11 judges headed by me? so we selected one film out of those 20 entries which are being made in India. Suppose you want to send a very suitable film, but if it is not produced in our country, what can we do about it? But in our selection process, I think, we were very honest, and out of those 20 films, with majority 'Barfi!' became a winner.

Sagarika Ghose: And what are the selection criteria?

Manju Bora: Selection criteria is like we have to see the films in totality. There are different elements in a film, as everyone knows, so those elements need to be there. Like, good craftsmanship, good performance, all these things are considered. And which film can represent our country, it has to be very Indian, and another criterion is that the producer has to an Indian. Another criterion is that the film has to be released in India.

Sagarika Ghose: So the primary criteria is that it has to be Indian, it has to represent the Indian realities. But can only Hindi films do that, Sudhir Mishra let me put it to you, there is in fact a question from a viewer Abhinandan Chatterjee, this has also come to us on Twitter, he writes, "Why not Chitrangada directed by Rituparno Ghosh, an outstanding film? Why are regional films always neglected for Oscar entries? And in fact Rituparno Ghosh has himself Twitting. Rituparno Ghosh has been Twitting, "What I'd like to point out is that all Indian Oscar nominations have come from Bollywood, barring a few 'politically perforced' Marathi films. Why this discrimination? India has a strong enriching tradition of regional cinema being made all over the country." Respond to that, do Hindi films necessarily get chosen above regional cinema in Oscar entries?

Sudhir Mishra: Well let me first of all say that there is a lot of criticism against 'Barfi!', where Chaplin is brought into the question. If you see films like the 'Artist' and many other films, they are all Chaplin inspired. For example, I think, Gangs of Wasseypur is a great film, but, you know, people select and one film that is gone, and I think you should now hope for it to win. That said you know I have always thought that India represents many industries, then there should be more than one film that should go. Kerala film industry is very different from the Bombay industry, which is very different from Tamil industry, which is very different from Bengali industry. I think, at least three films should go always, one from East India, one from South India, and one from Bombay, because they are three separate industries, and I think o choose one is not a good thing. And it does a lot of disservice to lot of films from other parts. I have always said that more than one film should go. I mean, there are three distinct industries in India.

Sagarika Ghose: Let me get the film critics in here, Rajeev Masand do you think that in the regional films that were in the list, 'Eega' for example the Telegu film, it was highly graphic from what I hear. Do you really think that 'Barfi!' really standout, given the choices of regional films that were also on the shortlist.

Rajeev Masand: I think, it is not possible to find one film that will satisfy everyone, I think it is difficult to pick one best film, but I do think that in a surprising good year, it has been a fantastic year and there has been some good films, and like you correctly said there were some regional films that clearly have been overlooked. A film like 'Deeol' Marathi film, I think is as good as 'Barfi!' if not better. And I do think there is clearly very often, you know, the jury tends to look at Bollywood films more favourably. I think that is clearly very evident. It is a surprisingly very good year, and there were very fine films. Is 'Barfi!' the best film, it's hard to pick a film that everyone likes, but I think there were some very strong films even with in other Bollywood films, I think films like 'Paan Singh Tomar', Gangs of Wasseypur', films like 'Kahani', as good as 'Barfi!' if not better.

Sagarika Ghose: So there were in fact? 'Paan Singh Tomar', when I putout by Twitter poll, whether 'Barfi!' was the best film or not, 'Paan Singh Tomar', won lot of votes. Let me come to you Meenakshi Shedde, a writer in Firstpost Lakshmi Chaudhry has written that there are three reasons why 'Barfi!' will be an Oscar dud. She says that 'it borrows heavily from Charlie Chaplin's 'Adventure and City of Light', from 'Notebook', from 'Singing in the rain'. She also says it is not uniquely Indian, and she also says that it is simply not good enough. The choice that the jury is very Hindi centric and it shows that it is enslaved by Bollywood hierarchy. Do you agree withy this take or not?

Meenakshi Shedde: I find 'Burfi!' quite charming but I have to agree that it is not uniquely Indian. In a sense, when I say, it means sit won't be same in any other culture that is not true. But I think film like 'Eega' or 'Deeol' are much more uniquely Indian. And they also often insides into our society and culture, and are self critical. If you also have at the end an underdog as the hero, that is an ultimate combo. But I think the biggest tragedy this year, that we really had a mixed jury, with a regional filmmaker heading the jury, and we still could not look beyond Bollywood, I think, that is the biggest tragedy, really.

Sagarika Ghose: Manju Bora, respond to that, you are a regional filmmaker yourself, was the jury enslaved by the Bollywood hierarchy, the Bollywood star system.

Manju Bora: As an independent filmmaker I always have this question in my mind, that all the electronic media, even the print media? do they ever think to promote a regional film. For example, films from Assam, Manipur, films from other states, they have forgotten to do that. Suppose I want to promote my film, will any channel come and do publicity of my film.

Sagarika Ghose: But what about your role to promote regional cinema?

Manju Bora: We would always like to promote regional films, but in fact what we are doing practically. But this moment I'm very said to say that in the 20 films, most of them were Hindi. No film came from Odisha, no film came from Bengal, from Assam?

Sagarika Ghose: But just because maximum films come from Hindi, that doesn't mean you choose only from Hindi. You could make choices based on cinematic quality.

Manju Bora: Definitely, when you are selecting a board, some juries are there from different regions, then you have to depend on them, and as rules go, which ever movie gets me maximum votes get selected.

Sagarika Ghose: So t is winability rather than talent. Let me bring in Rajeev Masand here, Rajeev, I know you have strong views on winability and the films that can actually win, can actually lobby, and market themselves to the academy, as Aamir Khan showed with 'Lagaan' that you have to go out there and market and lobby for your film. Does that guide the jury?

Rajeev Masand: It does, I mean, it should. I'm going to say something very controversial here, you are not really meant to be looking at the best film, you are meant to be looking at the correct film. You are meant to be looking at a film which could exploit that opportunity. And, you know, like it or not, fortunate or unfortunate, the truth is that a lot of Bollywood films, coming from big studios, have a much greater opportunity to exploit that potential. Last year there was a regional film that was sent, and in fact the producers, you know, came out very openly and said they needed help from independent producers, independent filmmakers to really fund their Oscar campaign because really what happens at this point is just a film being selected from India. The work really starts from this point on. And the whole selection process? I have to appreciate what Manju Bora said, she said, "20 films were submitted and most of them were Bollywood films." There is a flaw in the system itself, the film has to be entered by a producer. The truth is that a lot of regional films and filmmakers don't enter because there is a heavy fee to enter that film line. The fee is perhaps Rs 1 lakh, but you have to understand that for a lot of regional films that is a big amount. And then the cost of staging a campaign, Oscar campaign, in the US, where they need to woo the academy to look at your film is an expensive and long procedure, which a lot of Bollywood films have those deep pockets. Producers like UTV, producers of films like 'Barfi!' have those deep pockets. Aamir Khan spent 4-5 months after 'Lagaan' was selected, to actually run that campaign, to make sure that maximum numbers of jury members watch 'Lagaan', which is why 'Lagaan' made it to that shortlist of five films. So, yes, it is about winability, it is not really so much about which is the best film. In any case it is hard to pick the best film and find a film that pleases everyone. It is about which is the film that could do, that can exploit that potential and make it to that final shot. And I also want to say, given that criteria, also, I think, perhaps one has to look at films like 'Paan Singh Tomar', 'Kahani' if one was looking at stronger Bollywood films. And as Meenakshi said you need films that are inherently Indian. You need films that are topical. If you just look at films that have won Oscar in the foreign language category in the past couple of years. you know, the films like 'Departures', the Japanese film, even film like Roberto Benigni's film 'Life Is Beautiful', these are films that are inherently true to their culture. And also films that are typical, but that in case of 'Barfi!' is not true.

Sagarika Ghose: But is 'Barfi!' true to its culture, because again quote from Lakshmi Chaudhry article, she has quoted Mark Harris who is a film writer who has written, "That in the best foreign language film category, the academy likes movies that depicts, the drawbacks, the ritual, the sociological peculiarities, the class and historical scars of which ever country they are from." So what he is trying to say that the academy prefers the realism of the foreign language film. And 'Barfi!' this time is up against 'warwick' which is about child soldiers in South Africa. So is 'Barfi!' actually reflecting the gritty reality of India, or is it a beautifully shot film, which perhaps doesn't have the change against the criteria which the academy wants from foreign language films.

Rajeev Masand: In deed that is true in fact also because if you look a 'Barfi!', you know, it is a sweet film, but it is not the escapist part of the film that is the problem, you know, if you look at the film like Roberto Benigni's 'Life Is Beautiful'. 'Burfi!' is a very sought of upbeat film, but it is not topical. But 'Burfi!' is not very fine film, it is just not topical.

Sagarika Ghose: You made some very, very points, let me get Sudhir Mishra, Sudhir Mishra, my statistics, we have sent 45 films to the Oscars since 1957, 30 of them are in Hindi, 15 only in the regional languages. Two Bengali, eight Tamil, two Marathi, two Malayalam, one Telegue. Do you also agree what Rajeev is saying, that in fact the regional cinema doesn't have the financial muscle to mount an Oscar campaign?

Sudhir Mishra: No, while Bombay film industry is entitled to send one movie, and 'Barfi!' is the choice? and I don't agree with the criticism that it can't be Chaplainst. That was a choice of the jury, you know, there was a time when 'Hazaron Khwahishen' didn't go and some other went. There can be many stories that can be bought? but I would like to reemphasise that you should lobby with the American academy that India is not one industry?

Sagarika Ghose: No but respond to that point, Sudhir Mishra, you made that point before, respond to the other point, the regional cinema doesn't have the financial muscle, is that the problem?

Sudhir Mishra: No, for example, something link 'No Man's Land' is not coming from a rich production company, or anything.

Sagarika Ghose: So you don't necessarily need that big budget.

Sudhir Mishra: I mean, may be you do, but if you don't have a budget doesn't mean you can't send a film.

Sagarika Ghose: Meenakshi Shedde, let get you to respond to what Rajeev Masand was saying that in fact it is not just talent, it is not just the best film it is the winnable film, that is the kind of film that needs to go. Do you want to give us your take on that?

Meenakshi Shedde: That is absolutely right, you know, from the Malayalam film (*) last year, it really suffered although it got selected, because there is a strategy required, but also because it has to release in a specific parts of Los Angeles. So it is not just having the money, it is also knowing, who, how, and not crossing the line. This is completely different from making a great film, so I think, that does come in, but it really shouldn't stop us from sending a good film from India. For example film like 'Paan Singh Tomar', it was uniquely Indian; it was offering insides to our society, and I think the producers had deep pocket, so I think in that sense it had press more buttons. And we should really think out of the box, I thought 'Arjun' was totally fantastic Indian film, you won't find that in any culture, it was really mesmerising elements from all over Asia, in its art and in its story telling. I don't think Box office is the criteria in this case, but also deep pocket, if they were really behind it. In fact Disney from overseas invited it to be released in Los Angeles.

Sagarika Ghose: There are other factors that apply, but Manju Bora let me put it to, you know, the charges of plagiarism that exist against 'Barfi!', that the fact that it as been taken from Charlie Chaplin. There are scenes that are lifted from the notebook, there is that the music is copied, there is apparently similarities in singing in the rain. I am quoting Lakshmi Chaudhry, she says, "When it comes to Oscars, however, we are content to watch a good not great 'Barfi!' doodle towards expected failure, so why bother competing at all." What do you think these charges of plagiarism disqualify 'Barfi!'

Manju Bora: No actually he had to go through a democratic process, and like earlier as I said the majority said 'Bardi!' is the winner. So I can't comment on plagiarism, because everybody know how films are being made, and how good movies are copied by many good filmmakers

Sagarika Ghose: But did the jury know, was the jury aware that these scenes were lifted?

Manju Bora: No, nobody discussed that thing? According to the rules, no remake film is suppose to in the winner list. But it was not discussed in the process of our selecting the film. And neither I had any knowledge before coming here.

Sagarika Ghose: So simply had no knowledge that these were lifted. Had you known would you have chosen 'Barfi!'

Manju Bora: No, it is not possible, as a filmmaker, I can't say that I have seen all the films made in this world. And only after seeing those films I have come to become the jury of the competition.

Sagarika Ghose: But Charlie Chaplin you must have seen?

Manju Bora: Charlie Chaplin is my favourite, of course, Ranbir Kapoor was sometime like Charlie Chaplin and sometime even like Raj Kapoor, but what ever he was, he came out very well. Whether he copied Charlie Chaplin or Raj Kapoor, the character he played, I think, he did justice to the character.

Sagarika Ghose: But you don't regret sending 'Barfi!', now that you know about the charges of copying.

Manju Bora: No, you see, after selecting one film, with all the limitations we had, now I can't repent, I can't even say anything because once it is selected by the majority votes, it is being selected. If we had selected other film, same think would have happened, that why this film.

Sagarika Ghose: So you hope in fact for a better film. Very quickly Rajeev, do you think that the charges of the copying that exist against 'Barfi!' will actually even disqualify it in Oscars.

Rajeev Masand: I don't think it will disqualify it is Oscars, because to be fair Charlie Chaplin is not the problem here, Ranbir has said all along that he had been channelling Chaplin. He said that he is channelling Raj Kapoor. I don't think the plagiarism charges will come in the way. I also that I know Sudhir Mishra has a very intresting take on the whole plagiarism charge and why all films are in a sense inspired from either real life or from other creative arts. But on the note was it the correct film to send this year, were there better films, I think there were better films this year.

Sagarika Ghose: There were better films. Thank you very much, Sudhir Mishra, Mudhir Mishra, Rajeev Masand, and Meenakshi Shedde.

A-Rod gets day off vs Twins with bruised left foot

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:44 a.m. ET Sept. 26, 2012

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The New York Yankees have held third baseman Alex Rodriguez out of the lineup with a bruised left foot.

Rodriguez fouled a ball off his foot in Tuesday's game at Minnesota and was on the bench for Wednesday's series finale against the Twins. Manager Joe Girardi said he might've given Rodriguez a rest for this game regardless, or at least used him as the designated hitter. Girardi said the 14-time All-Star could be available to pinch hit depending on how he felt.

To break up the left-handers in his lineup, Girardi switched Derek Jeter to the second spot and made Ichiro Suzuki the leadoff man.

Rodriguez has one hit in his last 14 at-bats. He missed nearly six weeks earlier in the season because of a broken left hand.

At Home with London's Antiques Whisperer : Remodelista

London antiques dealer Will Fisher is obsessed with beautiful objects from the past; when you're with him, you feel you are in the presence of an antiques whisperer. Fisher doesn?t just talk about antiques; he actually speaks to them, coaxing them to come alive and willing them to become relevant.

As you'd expect, his own London home is filled with centuries-old relics and furnishings (many of which he?s been collecting since childhood). His shop, Jamb Limited, is London?s go-to source for antique fireplaces and reproduction chimney pieces. Texture and patina speak to him as do line and volume; ever so sparingly in wonderfully hushed tones, complete with a dash of humor along the way.

N.B.: Fisher recently sold the majority of his collection at a Christie?s Auction, enabling him to begin collecting all over again. For information on his new collections, see Jamb Limited and Hawker Antiques.

Obama: US to 'do what we must' to stop nuke-armed Iran

Jason Szenes / EPA

Barack Obama addresses the opening of the 67th session of the United Nations General Assembly at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Tuesday.

By NBC News' Ian Johnston and news services

Updated at 10:55 a.m. ET:?Barack Obama told the United Nations General Assembly Tuesday that the United States will "do what we must" to stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons.

?

The president also said that while there was still time for a diplomatic solution to the crisis that "time is not unlimited."

Amid mounting tensions over Iran's nuclear program and talk of a military strike by Israel on Iran, Obama has refused demands from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to set an explicit "red line" for Tehran.

Netanyahu has shown growing impatience over Obama's entreaties to hold off on attacking Iran's nuclear sites to give sanctions and diplomacy more time to work.

Underscoring the depth of the problem, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said in New York on Monday that Israel has no roots in the Middle East and would be "eliminated,"?ignoring a U.N. warning to avoid his usual incendiary rhetoric ahead of the annual General Assembly session. Iran denies seeking a nuclear bomb.

'Time is not unlimited'
Obama said that the U.S. wanted to find a peaceful solution to the problem and believed "that there is still time and space to do so."

?But that time is not unlimited. We respect the right of nations to access peaceful nuclear power, but one of the purposes of the United Nations is to see that we harness that power for peace,? he said.

U.S. officials reportedly suspect Iran is behind a string of recent cyber attacks that were aimed at major U.S. banks. Jim Finkle of Reuters has more on the story.

?Make no mistake: A nuclear-armed Iran is not a challenge that can be contained. It would threaten the elimination of Israel, the security of Gulf nations, and the stability of the global economy. It risks triggering a nuclear-arms race in the region, and the unraveling of the non-proliferation treaty,? he said.

?That?s why a coalition of countries is holding the Iranian government accountable. And that?s why the United States will do what we must to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon,? he added.

?

Speaking Tuesday to the General Assembly, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he rejected threats of military action by one state against another,?in an apparent reference to recent comments by Israeli, Iranian and U.S. officials.

While he did not specify what countries he was talking about, Ban added, "I also reject both the language of delegitimization and threats of potential military action by one state against another. Any such attacks would be devastating."

US-Israel rift over Iran widens; Obama denies Netanyahu asked for meeting

With exactly six weeks to go before the U.S. election, Obama will seek to reassure American voters as well as world leaders that they can count on him to handle the latest global challenges, even as Republican challenger Mitt Romney seizes the chance to pan his foreign policy.

Friction mounts as Israel asks that U.S. give Iran an ultimatum; a tricky position for Obama, whose foreign policy has been lauded. NBC's Andrea Mitchell and CNBC's John Harwood report.

With campaign pressures building in a close race, Obama's final turn on the world stage before facing voters has left little doubt about his immediate priorities.

Report: Iran mulls 'pre-emptive attack' against Israel; commander warns of 'World War III'

He skipped the customary one-on-one meetings with foreign counterparts but went ahead with the taping of a campaign-style appearance on the popular television talk show "The View" -- a tradeoff that drew Republican criticism.

Obama planned to be in and out of New York in 24 hours, one of the briefest presidential visits to the annual U.N. session in recent memory, and he will be off to the election battleground state of Ohio on Wednesday.

'Disgusting' video
Obama also discussed the attacks on U.S. embassies and consulates ? including the one that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans in Benghazi, Libya ? amid outrage over a California-made film that mocked the Prophet Muhammad.

He described the video, "Innocence of Muslims," as "crude and disgusting" and an insult "not only to Muslims, but to America as well," but defended America's stance on freedom of speech.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discusses the "danger of not acting" in the era of a potentially nuclear-armed Iran.

"I know there are some who ask why we don't just ban such a video. The answer is enshrined in our laws: Our Constitution protects the right to practice free speech," he said.

"Here in the United States, countless publications provoke offense. Like me, the majority of Americans are Christian, and yet we do not ban blasphemy against our most sacred beliefs. As President of our country, and Commander-in-Chief of our military, I accept that people are going to call me awful things every day, and I will always defend their right to do so," he added.

Pugnacious Iranian president rips Israel, US ahead of final UN speech

Obama also took Bashar Assad to task for the Syrian president's?efforts to crush an 18-month uprising against his regime.

"The future must not belong to a dictator who massacres his people. If there is a cause that cries out for protest in the world today, peaceful protest, it is a regime that tortures children and shoots rockets at apartment buildings," he said.

"And we must remain engaged to assure that what began with citizens demanding their rights does not end in a cycle of sectarian violence," he added.

The unsettled climate surrounding Obama's U.N. visit will be a stark reminder that the heady optimism that greeted him when he took office promising to be a transformational statesman has cooled.

Iran increases price on writer Salman Rushdie's head by $500k

Campaigning in Colorado, Romney argued that the United States should not be "at the mercy" of events in the Muslim world. "We want a president who will shape events in the Middle East," he said.

A Pew poll found that while 45 percent of Americans approved of Obama's handling of the attacks on U.S. diplomatic missions in the Muslim world, only 26 percent backed Romney's criticism of his response.?

Vampire squid sucks up garbage, not blood

Despite their name, vampire squid are not deep-sea bloodsuckers. In fact, new research finds these mysterious creatures are garbage disposals of the ocean.

Using long, skinny tendrils called filaments, vampire squid capture marine detritus hovering in the water ? from crustacean eyes and legs to larvae poop ? then coat it in mucus before chowing down, according to the new findings.

The discovery is a first for cephalopods, which include squid, octopus and cuttlefish, said study researcher Henk-Jan Hoving.

"It's the first record of a cephalopod that doesn't hunt for living prey," Hoving, a postdoctoral scientist at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in California, told LiveScience.

A mystery squid
Vampire squid (Vampyroteuthis infernalis), which grow to be about a foot (30 centimeters) long, are widespread but not well-known. Even their life spans remains a mystery. Their name comes from their dark coloring, red eyes and the cloak-like webbing between their arms. And as namesakes of the undead, vampire squid apparently have little need for breathing. They thrive in oceanic oxygen minimum zones, where the oxygen levels are sometimes less than 5 percent that of the surrounding air. ?

Adding to their mystique, vampire squid are capable of bioluminescence. They use this self-made light to blend in with sunlight filtering down to the deep sea.

Along with their eight arms, vampire squid have two long, whiplike filaments. Researchers have long suspected that these long tendrils might help the squid feed, but the new study is the first to clarify how. [ Under the Sea: A Squid Album ]

Hoving and his colleagues observed captured vampire squid in the lab and also pored over 24 hours of videotape of vampire squid seen between 1992 and 2012 in their natural environments in Monterey Bay submarine canyon off the coast of Northern California.

Hoving said he first noticed that after researchers added some food to a tank containing a captive vampire squid, the animal retracted its filament and wiped it off on its suckered arms. And in the videos, Hoving noticed vampire squid with "amorphous masses" in their mouths.

After Hoving examined the digestive tract contents of museum specimens of squid, he began to put the pieces together. Instead of containing chewed-up fish or crustaceans as the stomachs of most cephalopods do, the vampire squid stomachs held bits of flotsam and jetsam: fish eggs, bits of crustacean antennae and eyes and legs, larvae and even larvae feces, among other things. These scraps were cemented together by chunks of mucus.

Vampire feeding strategy
An anatomical examination of the squid revealed their suckers have no suction power; rather, they excrete mucus. What appears to happen, Hoving said, is that squid hover in the water, extending out a filament (which can be up to eight times as long as their own body). Such behavior was seen in 33 percent of video observations.

Marine detritus, including bits of dead crustaceans, larvae, eggs and even tiny jellyfish-like creatures called salps, fall and float past the filament, getting caught on sticky hairs on the structure. The squid can then pull in the food and brush it onto their arms, which coat the food with mucus to stick it together. Finger-like appendages called cirri then move the food toward the mouth at the base of the arms. [ 10 Scariest Sea Creatures ]

This passive eating style enables the squid to live in low-oxygen zones in the ocean, Hoving said. Vampire squid also have extremely low metabolisms and a specialized protein in their respiratory system that clings strongly to oxygen molecules, he said.

With this knowledge, Hoving said, researchers can study how fast the squid grow and how long they live.

"It shows again that cephalopods are extremely adapted in a wide variety of ways to the ocean habitat," Hoving said. "They're very successful in the world's oceans. It's amazing that some of these cephalopods have even found ways to live under conditions that are adverse to most other animals."

The researchers reported their findings Tuesday in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.?

Anti-union Gov. Scott Walker tweets support of unionized NFL refs

(AP)

Like most Green Bay Packers fans, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker woke up Tuesday morning still stinging from a controversial call?made by the NFL's replacement referees?that cost the team a victory over the Seattle Seahawks on "Monday Night Football."

"After catching a few hours of sleep, the #Packers game is still just as painful," Walker tweeted. "#Returntherealrefs."

The Seahawks' 14-12 victory ended on a Hail Mary pass that was intercepted by Packers safety M.D. Jennings but ruled a touchdown by the replacement refs. The play sparked a firestorm of criticism on Twitter, with players, coaches and fans like Walker all weighing in on the debacle.

But the Republican governor's call for the league to end its dispute with the unionized officials is surprising, considering Walker backed anti-union legislation in the state.

"His tweet has nothing to do with unions and everything to do with a blown call," Cullen Werwie, Walker's press secretary, wrote in an email to Yahoo News.

Some Twitter users disagreed.

"So you PRO-union now?" one wrote in response to Walker's tweet. "Here's what hiring low-wage scabs gets you."

"Really!?! You hypocritical FOOL," wrote another. "Your attack on unions gives businesses the ability to hire unqualified employees."

The NFL and the officials union are reportedly battling over about $3 million annually in pension commitments, according to Yahoo Sports.

"The replacement ref experiment is a disaster," Yahoo's Dan Wetzel wrote in a column calling on NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to issue a public apology. "It has overwhelmed the league. It's overshadowed strong play. It's turned Goodell's vaunted shield into a joke."
