Justin Bieber Pictured In Studio With Kanye West

Pair look like they're working on songs for Bieber's upcoming Believe album.

Perhaps Kanye West doesn't have to sleep like the rest of us mere mortals. That might explain how the rapper is seemingly everywhere at once these days: squiring Kim Kardashian all over New York, shooting a mysterious mini-movie in Qatar
and popping into a recording studio to work on tracks with pal Justin Bieber.

While the 18-year-old pop star has been wrapping up work on his upcoming album, Believe,
due out June 19, he got a visit from West. Bieber's bodyguard Kenny Hamilton confirmed the superstar summit, tweeting out a photo of the pair working together on an unspecified song.

"Putting the finishing touches on the album and it's gonna be special," he wrote while posting an Instagram pic of West tapping away on a laptop in the studio with Bieber in the background. He followed with a post that appeared to be another enthusiastic response to the studio get-down, writing, "Also witnessed a current legend and one future legend make magic once again ... I love this thing we call music!"

Bieber's been giving his fans plenty of tantalizing sneak peeks over the past week. In addition to announcing the release date during an appearance on "The Voice," he also brought along a teaser for his as-yet-unreleased "Boyfriend" video. After that glimpse, he was spotted shooting new scenes
for the highly anticipated clip in which he was kissing a mystery brunette on set.

"The concept of this video, I mean, it's not like a steady concept," Bieber told MTV News
while shooting the video back in March. "It's not like 'Justin follows this girl to this spot.' No, it's a bunch of amazing scenes: like a fire scene, we have an ice scene.

"It's kind of like bouncing back and forth," he said. "And then there's scenes of me and just a bunch of girl dancers, and just some great shots, great artistic shots, great shots of me smiling. It's fun." He also tweeted out the cover art
on Friday, a simple black-and-white close-up of his face with the word "BELIEVE" stamped in a yellow caution-tape font underneath. The album will reportedly feature a song reacting to the paternity suit
filed by a 20-year-old California woman who claimed she became pregnant with Bieber's baby after a brief bathroom hook-up at an October 2010 concert; the suit was dropped in November.

In addition to whatever Kanye and Bieber cooked up, the album will also feature a duet with Taylor Swift
, as well as magic made with Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine and Drake.

Switched On: Big kicks, not all for starters

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

Image

The end of last week's Switched On left doubt for the future of dedicated devices that tread on the turf of smartphones. After all, funding is key to every major new product initiative and, despite the vast fortunes of many Silicon Valley engineers that have been accumulated via IPOs and acquisitions, few wish to take on the risk of fronting a new consumer device themselves.(In 2007, the handheld FlipStart PC was hatched from FlipStart Labs, funded by Vulcan Ventures, the investment arm of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.)

Most venture capitalists abhor the device business; it is a rare device that makes it to the spotlight of startup debutante balls such as DEMO, TechCrunch Disrupt, or Launch. Even most of the 94 companies at CES' Eureka Park were not developing end-user devices Where, then, can a device entrepreneur go for funding and pick up some publicity in the process?

Sony's Alpha A37 and NEX-F3 pose for the camera, reveal more angles, details

Sony's Alpha A37 and NEX-F3 pose for the camera, reveal more angles, details

Well, well, talk about déjà vu! It was just yesterday that a corner of Sony's 16.1 megapixel NEX-F3 leaked onto the interwebs and now more photos have surfaced, along with a previously unannounced shooter, the Alpha A37 SLT. The pictures come courtesy of Yang Canggih, which says it had chance to demo the two devices yesterday at Sony's Partner's Conference in Jakarta (Curiously, the NEX-F3 post isn't live as of this writing, but Sony Alpha Rumors has the images up.) Starting with the F3, the mirrorless camera has last some of the curves found on its older sibling, the C3, adopting the angular edges that once made the NEX-7 the badass standout in the lineup. You'll notice that the shutter button and grip have an uncanny resemblance to the 7's, not to mention that it's clearly gained a pop-up flash -- a first for the lower-end NEXs. Past that, the rumored -- and self-portrait friendly -- 180 degree tilt-screen is also present, which'll likely give the C3 an edge over its siblings when it comes to composing shots. Also worth note, some of the buttons on back have been slightly repositioned.

Moving along, those hoping for a successor to the A35 will apparently have their wish granted with the 16.1 megapixel A37, which is essentially an evolutionary update. According to Yang Canggih, it sports the articulating display from last generation of NEX cams, Auto Portrait Framing (first introduced with the A57), four more effect modes (up from 11) and an ergonomic grip in the vein of the A77. Sadly, that's about all that's currently known, so hopefully we'll get an official introduction to the cameras soon. Head past the break for a shot of the A37 and then check out the links below for even more of both.

Google Drive Arrives In ChromeOS Developer Channel

Google DriveEver since Google released its cloud storage service Google Drive earlier this week, there has been some speculation as to what its integration with ChromeOS, Google's cloud-centric operating system, would look like. Today, Google released the first developer version of ChromeOS 20 with support for Google Drive. As expected, Google Drive is now deeply integrated into the ChromeOS file manager, though this is clearly just a first effort and still needs quite a bit of work.

President Obama test drives a Sphero on Boulder visit

Image

President Obama was in the Centennial State last night, hyping up an enthusiastic crowd at the University of Colorado at Boulder's Coors Events Center. Of course, he couldn't help but take some time to check out some some of the local innovation. The President took a few moments out of his busy schedule to play around with the smartphone-controlled Sphero RC ball, declaring "how cool is that," before demanding that the crowd, "give me some space to drive my ball." He also tossed out some superlatives like "terrific," after nearly driving it into a woman's flip-flop. Now that's a solid endorsement, if ever we've heard one. In all, it didn't last long -- the guy's got a country to run, after all.

Can 'NSYNC, Backstreet Boys Make Battle Of The Boy Bands Comeback?

Westlife and 5ive could upset two of the biggest boy bands of all time in the first round. Vote now!
By Christina Garibaldi

N'SYNC
Photo: Getty Images

We are still in the first round of voting in MTV's Battle of the Boy Bands, and already we are seeing some big surprises. Backstreet Boys are finding themselves behind Irish boy band Westlife, 'NSYNC are trailing former boy band 5ive and New Kids on the Block are neck-and-neck with British boy band Take That.

It seems like fans are rallying behind their favorites and battling it out to make sure they move on to the next round.

"I don't see how BSB and 'NSYNC are losing?!?!" MTV News reader Britney commented. Another fan, nickestlife, wrote, "Please VOTE WESTLIFE!!!! Don't let them LOSE!!!"

But the question on a lot of minds is: Why aren't the boy bands that dominated the U.S. pop charts not easily moving on to the next round?

"Remember that in America, while Westlife and Take That and 5ive were all a blip on the radar in the U.S., in the U.K. Take That and Westlife are enormous," Keith Caulfield, associate director of charts/retail at Billboard told MTV News. "Westlife, for example, has had 14 #1 singles on the U.K. singles chart, the second most among groups only behind the Beatles, so they're kind of big."

According to Melissa Maerz, senior writer for Entertainment Weekly, the fact that these older boy bands are British may work in their favor, especially with the emergence of One Direction and the Wanted.

"I think probably what's happening is a combination of things. I think the fact that One Direction is in the news for having the biggest debut of a British band of all time, including the Beatles, has really made everyone pay attention to them and everyone is talking about One Direction," Maerz said. "And because they and the Wanted are coming at the same time, people are starting to pay attention to British boy bands, and the kids who are just discovering One Direction and the Wanted probably have parents who can say to them, 'Oh, this is kind of the same thing that happened when Westlife and Take That came to our shores."

But no matter what their chart performance may be, or where they come from, their advancement in the next round depends on only one thing: the fans.

"It frankly just comes down to: Are there passionate fans that are going to bother to spend the time on voting?" Caulfied said. "I think, generally speaking, when you have two acts going against one another, whoever has the most motivated, contemporary, engaged fanbase on the Web will win."

Voting is under way in round one of MTV's Battle of the Boy Bands and closes at noon ET on Thursday, April 26. Winners are determined by fan ballots, so if your favorite band made the cut, keep voting. Tune in to AMTV and MTV Hits daily for boy-band video takeovers. Mr. America comes to Secaucus | Bodybuilding, Supplements, Diets ...

Secaucus will be the sight of many tan, tight, and muscular physiques on April 28 for the Mr. America and America Women Championships being held at the Crowne Plaza. Local resident and recreational bodybuilder Bob Bonham resurrected the historical Mr. America title last year.

Although he has faced opposition to his effort from competing bodybuilding associations, he hopes the natural, drug-free contest will generate greater interest in a sport that has been on the decline, especially among teens.

?It used to be the main show in this country,? said Bonham. He has been a resident of Secaucus the past 15 years and lives in the Harmon Cove area. ?You couldn?t get a better title than Mr. America. I would like to restore it.?

Mr. America is deeply rooted in bodybuilding history, beginning with attempts at a national amateur-like contest in 1938 followed by a more professional second contest that awarded the overall title in 1939 to Bert Goodrich. The contest was run by the American Athletic Union (AAU). It helped establish a foundation for future contests. Bodybuilders such as Steve Reeves of Hollywood ?Hercules? fame, Chris Dickerson, Jack Delinger, Roy Hilligenn, and Bill Pearl, who all carried the Mr. America title. The contest remained popular up until the 1970s, but began to fade as competition grew from other titles, among other factors.

?The AAU dropped bodybuilding from their criteria from all their sports and they let the trademark slip,? noted Bonham.

Regional contests abounded along with Mr. Universe and Mr. Olympia. The contests gave amateurs a way to further their career and eventually earn money and, in the most famous instance, paved the way for Arnold Schwarzenegger?s rise to Hollywood and political prominence.

He said that when he bought the trademark, he faced considerable opposition from bodybuilding associations he was once closely affiliated with because of the threat of added competition. According to Bonham, the other associations have blocked him from advertising in popular bodybuilding magazines, even though he worked as a promoter for 20 years. But he said that with the availability of social media tools like Facebook, he expects he will get about 50 to 60 participants and about 400 to 500 audience members to attend Mr. America.

All natural, drug-free

The Mr. America competition, as part of the International Natural Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation (INBF), is a pro-qualifier for the World Natural Bodybuilding Federation. Winners also receive a trophy.

The competition features categories for women and men of all ages including teenagers, women?s and men?s bodybuilding, mixed pairs, master?s competitions for those in their forties, fifties, sixties, and seventies, and women?s bikini competitions among others. He said the men?s physique competition is new this year.

Bonham said that the INBF is distinct from other bodybuilding associations because it is drug-free and natural.

?It is a totally positive experience for everybody,? said Bonham. ?There is a difference in attitudes. [Participants] are all happy they all live that lifestyle all year around.?

Participants undergo a polygraph lie-detector test and urine test before the competition. The contest tests for drugs such as anabolic steroids, growth hormones, and testosterone among others.

?The bodybuilders look changed, and now they have extended bellies but not us?not the natural guys,? said Bonham.

He said that bodybuilders now use insulin to enhance their build, which has to be taken in combination with a number of other drugs.

?I had just had a friend overdose from insulin,? noted Bonham.

Bonham described the bodybuilding role models that he grew up with in the 1960s and ?70s as having distinct shapes and bodies but that today ?everyone looks the same.? The advent of certain drugs and enhancements does not help that sentiment for Bonham.

?They took the aesthetic beauty out of [bodybuilding] with the drugs,? he said.

Generating interest among youth and beyond

?I was always a fan of the sport,? said Bonham. He said that as a child he devoured bodybuilding magazines and began working out when he was in the fifth grade.

?It has been my passion since I was in my early teens,? said Bonham. But he revealed that his main motivation was driven by his desire to impress girls.

?A girl said I had muscles and she ended up being my girlfriend.?

While teenagers like Bonham growing up in the ?60s wanted to be like bodybuilders to impress girls, teens today aren?t as interested according to Bonham but he hopes to change that.

?I also don?t want kids to be involved with drugs. It is the only way to save the sport,? said Bonham.

Bohnam said that the majority of bodybuilders these days are not young. He believes that mixed martial arts has dominated teenager attention for those interested in competing.

Bonham took his passion for bodybuilding and eventually opened a gym in 1984 with $6,000. The gym, Strong and Shapely, is located in East Rutherford. It has grown from 2,500 square feet to 25,000 square feet. He said that one reason he pursued the Mr. America title was for financial reasons to offset the challenges he has faced since the economic downturn but that he also hopes to return interest to a sport he said has been on the decline.

At his gym in Rutherford, Bonham said that all types of individuals work out including doctors, lawyers, teachers, and performers. He finds that people interested in weights are not the stereotypical ?muscle-heads.? He tries to encourage an interest in bodybuilding in all those who attend his gym.

?I hope it will help make the sport grow?help make the show grow,? said Bonham about his expectations for the Mr. America contest.

The contest will be held on April 28 at the Crowne Plaza in Secaucus. Prejudging is at 10 a.m. and the evening show begins at 5 p.m.

Parasite arms race spurs color change in bird eggs

The eggs laid by two African bird species have evolved different color patterns over a period of just 40 years, according to new research published in The American Naturalist. The quick change appears to be driven by an unwanted guest in the nest.

Cuckoo finches are brood parasites. They lay their eggs in the nests of other bird species, hoping to trick someone else into raising their young. To help keep their imposter eggs from being evicted, the cuckoo eggs have evolved to look a lot like those of its most common target, the tawny-flanked prinia. But prinias have evolved a defense. Their eggs have complex patterns of spots and squiggles and can vary substantially in color from female to female. The variable colors and patterns mean the cuckoo eggs aren't always a good match, and prinias can often spot them and toss them out of the nest.

University of Cambridge researchers Claire Spottiswoode and Martin Stevens show that the cuckoo's mimicryand the prinia's defenses against ithave caused the appearance of both species' eggs to change over time.

In the course of their research in Zambia, Spottiswoode and Stevens noticed that cuckoo and prinia eggs they were seeing in the wild differed markedly from those in a museum collection made at their study site. "For example, 30 years ago, cuckoo finches predominantly laid eggs that look red to our eyes, but now lay mainly blue ones," Stevens said. "Prinias in turn now more commonly lay olive-colored eggs, perhaps to escape their pursuing parasite."

To test these observations, the researchers used computer models that quantified changes on spot pattern and color in past and present eggs. Their models were calibrated to view the eggs through a bird's eyes, which are better than ours at seeing colors and distinguishing ultraviolet light.

The models confirmed the observation. The eggs are changing colors, and fast. The changes detected in this study happened over the course of just 40 years, a period "that is a mere blink of an evolutionary eye," Stevens said.

The research offers a prime example of an evolutionary arms race between parasite and host, the researchers say. The dominant color pattern of prinia eggs serves as a good defense only until the cuckoos catch up. At that point, natural selection should begin favor prinias that lay eggs with new colors, which make the cuckoo eggs stand out. In effect, the two species appear to be locked in a perpetual race around the color specrum.

"Just as humans need to invent new drugs to defeat evolving bacteria and viruses, so host defenses undergo rapid changes to evade cuckoos," Spottiswoode said.
